From the Trenches Series

The NewArchivist is beginning a series of posts focusing on the first time hunt for archives employment. This series is intended to bring insightful and honest perspectives from the trenches of the job search as it happens. Two people are serving as field bloggers for this series, Jason and Sophie. Please see below for their bios. Adding comments to their posts would no doubt help them and all of our readers.

Note: The From the Trenches bloggers will be using pseudonyms to facilitate candid posts. If you wish to communicate with them privately, please forward your request to Lance.

Bios:

Jason: I am 25 years old and a recent graduate of the University of Pittsburgh’s MLIS program, where my specialty was Archives, Records Management, and Preservation. I studied Religious Studies at Youngstown State University. My experience includes 2 archives assistant positions and a dental office management job. I am looking for an entry level position, but I hope to eventually end up at a place where I am able to pursue research in personal and community archives initiatives.

Sophie: I received my MLIS about two years ago with a focus on archival studies and academic libraries. My first job out of library school was in an academic library where I had some exposure to archives work, but mostly cataloging and other projects. I’m finding myself looking for a job again after the funding for the library I worked at was drastically cut and my position was eliminated. I will be focusing my job search on archivist positions as much as possible. However, as a result of my partner’s work/life situation, I cannot relocate to another area for at least another year if not more, so I will also look at librarian positions as well, focusing on academic libraries as much as possible.
