In the vein of the blogs In the Library with the Lead Pipe and Library Garden, this blog is a collaborative effort. The regular contributors are four archivists that attended graduate school together and, in May 2009, graduated with our Master of Science in Information (MSI) with an Archives and Records Management specialization. From there, we have started down our separate career paths. These includes job hunting and working in different institutions (government, university, corporate archives) different areas (digital and photo archives, special collection libraries, records management) and locations (Ann Arbor, Washington DC, etc.). For more about the regular contributors, see the Regular Contributors page (obviously).
The content of NewArchivist will vary as we touch upon different issues, however, we are planning on keeping our focus on what it is like as beginning archivists and trying to help others in our position, like others beginning their careers or students nearing graduation (and the dreaded job hunt). We think the commonality of our starting point and the diversity of our interests will make for some unique and differing perspectives, in other words: some quality blogging action.
In addition to us four, we invite others to participate by commenting and authoring guest posts. The more people we can get in on the conversation, the better! This especially includes views from more established professionals and educators. See the Guest Contributors page from more information and a list of contributors.
Comment Rules:
We come from the profession that invented the no-pens-or-purses-in-the-reading-room policies, so you know we will have some rules.
We cannot stress enough that we would would like this blog to be a place for conversation and debate. All comments that add to the discussion, bring up new points, or offer differing opinions and perspectives are greatly encouraged. We will do our best to follow the proposed Blogger’s Code of Conduct, and the Core Rules of Netiquette. We will also follow best practice and moderate the posts and comments. Those that are not civil, constructive, or relate to the topic will be deleted. In addition, I will make an explosion sound as the delete button is pressed.
Technical Stuff:
We are including this info for those nerds who are interested, and to support some open source tools.
NewArchivist is a self-hosted blog using WordPress. The blog was first built on a local machine using MAMP, which allows the user to fully install WordPress (or Drupal, etc.), on their Mac (I think there is also a PC version) and play around with it without exposing their mistakes to the entire universe. If you have any questions regarding these or other technical wonders, please contact webmaster@newarchivist.com.
